BANGKOK + KUALA LUMPUR

We left Laos mid-December to spend some time in Bangkok. Laos was very relaxing, although there was a cold spell there (it snowed up north of us) so that was interesting. Our wooden house was freezing. Almost no houses in Laos have any sort of heating mechanism. But, we managed.

Bangkok makes up for it though in terms of heat. Very warm and sunny. We’ve been staying pretty busy with work since November, and doing a lot of errands, replacing clothes, etc in Bangkok. Our apartment here is kind of loft style - pretty spacious and we like our sunny deck and the relaxed neighborhood we are in a lot.

We’ve found a lot of variety in the food here and have found most things to be really, really flavorful and very fresh. More soy sauce and oyster sauce to navigate around so I can’t always eat everything but a lot of curries, soups, and vegetable dishes have just fish sauce or are absent of soy sauce. So, so delicious!

Papaya salad, corn salad, different curries, and this minced pork and fish dish have been some of my favorites. And Thai milk tea of course. So sugary. So good. Oh, and mango sticky. Chicken satay. So much variety.

We are actually in Kuala Lumpur right now for a few days, but will be in Bangkok for a bit longer after that. Enjoying lots of burgers here. Diverse mix of halal, Chinese, Malay foods. Everything is super clean and sterile - public spaces, public transport, etc. Everyone is super friendly.

Happy we checked out KL. The weather here is nice too, hot but not as humid as Bangkok and it cools down a bit in the evening. Next week we head to Tokyo, which we are very much looking forward to. So many delicious burgers in KL. Our favorite was at Sixty Bites, but myBurgerLab was tasty, too. Sixty Bites was really incredible though…perfectly charred burger on the grill. Cannot say enough good things! Kuala Lumpur was a great spot to refill on burgers.

Super clean, easy to navigate, very friendly city overall. Other good food and drinks, too like the tea tarik (pulled black tea with milk), three layer tea (pulled black tea, milk, and palm sugar syrup), plus other Halal, Malay, and Chinese food. A fun mix!
